The Power of Reflexology with Elli Soumaki

What are the key health benefits of reflexology treatment?

Reflexology is a non-intrusive natural therapy working holistically with the aim to improve ones’ overall state of wellbeing. It involves the application of pressure to specific points on the feet & hands, with these points corresponding to specific organs and areas of the body. This can invoke a state of relaxation and a sense of relief to the corresponding area of the body. Several studies indicate that reflexology may reduce stress and anxiety, enhance sleep, reduce pain, improve circulation and boost mental wellness.

Can anyone have reflexology treatment?

While reflexology is an extremely safe healing practice, it is important to be aware of a few scenarios when reflexology might not be the best choice. These complications include:

  • Foot fractures, unhealed wounds, or active gout
  • Osteoarthritis that impacts the foot or ankle, or those with vascular disease of the legs or feet.
  • Pregnancy
  • Blood clots in your leg’s blood vessels.

How can this treatment be tailored to the individual and what can it help to treat?

Upon your first appointment, your reflexologist will conduct a consultation on:

  • Lifestyle
  • Health
  • Medical History
  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity per day/week

They will then begin to “scan” your feet by using alternative pressure with their hands. With “touch and feel “they can knowledgeably be aware which one or more of your body parts are not functioning properly. Finally, your reflexologist will create a “reflex map” to suit your personal needs.

What should people expect from their first reflexology session?

  • The practitioner will conduct a lifestyle consultation.
  • The reflexologist will explain how the treatment works and what to expect in the session. Any complications will also be been discussed as well as information on how to expect to feel after the treatment.
  • The reflexologist may choose to work only on the feet, or hands and ears depending on the outcome of your lifestyle and health consultation
  • If reflexology is done on your feet, you will lie or sit down. Your feet may be washed in warm water.
  • The practitioner will begin by assessing your feet for foot fractures, unhealed wounds, or active gout and will ask you about any foot or leg pain. They will work in all areas of the foot with gentle pressure.

Can this be a one-off treatment or do you recommend ongoing sessions?

The answer depends on a few factors. This decision is based on the degree of discomfort, the purpose of the treatments, the experience, and the patient’s time available.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about reflexology?

Reflexology is also known as zone therapy. The body is divided into ten zones and the purpose is to apply pressure to specific areas which reflect organs and systems of the body. Reflexology is one of the oldest natural treatments.
